Overview:
Tay Ninh is home to the Cao Dai sect which is a new religion in Vietnam with around a million followers. The religon is a hybrid of Buddhism. Taoism, Confucianism and Christianity. The Cao Dai Temple at Tay Ninh has been described as a Walt Disney fantasia of the East. The interior is truly engaging as statues of Jessus, Buddha and the Hindu God Brahma. Stand side by side. Explore this fascinating site and attend the colorful noon-day mass held by the Cao Dai followers.
Closer to Sai Gon is Cu Chi with a system of tunnels combining to form an underground city during the American/ Vietnam War. It is legendary for its network of underground tunnels, which extends over 220km, and is a popular destination for both Vietnamese and foreign visitors. Today, Cu Chi is a tranquil place of rice paddy fields with ducks and water buffalos bathing in the rivers alongside the road. But this peaceful rural scene suffered from the terrible destruction and defoliation caused by bombing and mines when Cu Chi was a "Free Target Zone". Cu Chi still contains plenty of evidence of the fierce battle that took place here and all over this area you will find the remnants of war. A morning drive will take you to Tay Ninh to visit the Cao Dai Holy See in time to watch the mid-day ceremony. After lunch, you will visit the famous Cu Chi tunnels, a byzantine maze of underground passages, chambers, rooms and booby traps used by both the Vietminh and the Viet Cong to suddenly materialise as if from nowhere, launch a lightning ambush, you will watch a short introductory video on the tunnels construction and explore the maze of tunnels. and vanish equally rapidly. You will spend the night in Ho Chi Minh City.
Cao Dai is a ‘new’ religion unique to Vietnam with around a million followers. Both its creed and its architecture are remarkable and exotic.
